There’s nothing better than homemade treats. That’s true for humans and our fur babies. Store-bought treats can be expensive and full of chemicals. Making them at home allows us to KNOW (and control) each ingredient.
These Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats only include THREE ingredients - Natural Peanut Butter, a Banana, and Old-Fashioned Oats.

This means they are WHEAT-FREE, high protein, and healthy for your dog.
These easy DIY Paw Print Ornaments are made with only three ingredients too! Make them this holiday season and have an inexpensive, heartwarming keepsake of your dog for years to come.

What kind of peanut butter?
It is incredibly important to use a peanut butter that does NOT contain xylitol. NO XYLITOL.
According to VCA Animal Hospital, “Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs. Even small amounts of xylitol can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, liver failure, or even death in dogs."
I like to use (and eat) Skippy’s Natural Peanut Butter. It does not contain xylitol. It tastes great (I eat it by the spoonful). And, it doesn’t separate like other natural peanut butters.

How to Make Healthy Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats
This recipe is truly simple. It's incredibly easy, quick, and can be done in one bowl.
I prefer to use an overripe banana, like I do in my banana recipes for humans.

- Simple Banana Bread Chocolate Chip Muffins
- Easy, Moist, & Delicious Banana Bread Recipe
It's easiest to just mash the banana in the mixing bowl that you're using to mix everything then add the oats and peanut butter.
In the "How to" video on this page, I mashed up the banana in a separate bowl. Then, I threw the oats, banana, and peanut butter in the main mixing bowl. This was to show each ingredient.
Both ways work. The order of ingredients does not matter in this recipe.
Cutting these Peanut Butter Dog Treats into Shapes
The batter will be a bit sticky because of the peanut butter, but I still like to cut shapes out of it.

To do this, I plop the mixture on some parchment paper. Then, I spread it out to about 1/4" thickness and cut with cookie cutters.
I always recommend this Wilton Cookie Cutters Set because I've had it for about a decade and I'm still obsessed with it. It includes so many great shapes like a dog bone, a dog, circles, hearts, and more.
I also love this set of Dog Cookie/Treat Cutters. It includes different sizes of bones, paw prints, and dogs so you can make a variety of cute, easy homemade .

Terri says
How long are these good for
Mischka says
Hi Terri! They’re good for about a week. I like to store them in an airtight container in the fridge.
Mary says
We’ve added blueberries to ours and the dogs love them. Once they are cool, you can also freeze them in an airtight bag/container or you can freeze the mixture and just use what you need that week.
Brooke B says
Blueberries are toxic to dogs. You can google it.
Mischka says
Hi Brooke,
According to American Kennel Club, blueberries are safe for dogs to eat (in moderation, of course) - https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/nutrition/can-dogs-eat-blueberries/
PetMd also says the same - https://www.petmd.com/dog/nutrition/evr_multi_healthy_snacks & https://www.petmd.com/dog/nutrition/can-dogs-eat-blueberries
Thank you for your concern for other readers though. We all need to look out for one another.
Marcy says
What method do you use to prepare the cookie sheet?
Mischka says
Hi Marcy, I like to use parchment paper. Some people use tin foil. It’s just so the treats do not stick to the pan, so even a little oil on the cookie sheet would work.
Lisa says
I added an egg and a tiny bit of water to get the mix going . Also made the oatmeal into more of a powder/ flour. Turned out pretty good.
Craig says
Made one batch today just to see if my dog would like them and he loves them . Will be making these again . Thank u for these healthy treats .
Lisa says
I liked the idea of this recipe only being three ingredients, however mine just did not stay together. Even after letting them cool completely, they’re still smooshy, no matter how long I cook them. I’m going to try to add an egg and see if that will help keep them together. ♀️
Mischka says
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that. Usually baking them for a little longer and letting them cool fixes any issues with that. Someone commented on Pinterest that they added an egg to the recipe. It worked out well for her and her neighbor's dog (she said, he loved them). Did adding an egg work better for you?
Honeylyn says
Hello,
I have plenty of PB2 power peanut butter. Can I use this instead of the regular peanut butter? It has less calories too 🙂
Mischka says
Hi, Regular peanut butter holds the treats together. Some people add an egg to help it to do so. I have never used powdered peanut butter, so I don't know if an egg or two would be enough to hold the treats together. If you try it, I would love to hear how it turns out. I've been thinking about getting the PB2 Powdered Peanut Butter for myself.
Marilyn says
I usually purchase this from a local set of middle school girls that sell it and donate all the proceeds to a shelter we are home. But I figured I’d give it a try and do it myself. This is my baby favorite treat.
Linda says
I just made these treats and they turned out great. Do you have any other recipes for treats that are good for longer than a week? I have a small dog and cannot possibly feed her all 36 treats in one week.
Mischka says
Hi, I’m happy they turned out great. I completely understand about not being able to feed all the treats to your dog in a week. My “goddaughter” is a pomapoo. She’s only 10 lbs. I’ve been working on some small batch recipes and dried treats that will last longer. They’re not ready to be posted yet though. For now, I have some frozen treats that last a long time - Easy Frozen Dog Treats
Cassandra says
Perhaps you could freeze them.
Rosemarie Hubbard says
Love you recipes ❤️ And what’s better so do my dogs and my daughter’s dogs Thank you for all your posts
Mischka says
Thank you so much, Rosemarie! This really brightened my day.❤️
